The Flash is one of the CW Network’s biggest shows. The show not only pays close attention to the source material (of course it takes liberties here and there like most comic-to-TV/films do), but it also captures the feeling, wonder, and joy of the comic book series. Every week, the audience is treated to the adventures of Barry Allen, the fastest man alive and he uses The Speed Force to help save not only citizens of Central City but sometimes citizens of the world and beyond. The show is a part of the “Arrow-verse” on CW and recently included CBS’s Supergirl making it now the “Berlanti-verse.” The inter-connectivity of these shows is rivaled only by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s why it was a bit of a disappointment when Warner Bros announced that their DC Cinematic Universe would not be connected to any of their television shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Gotham, and soon to be Krypton). The powers that be over at Warner Bros. would prefer that each medium is able to have their own separate characters and separate stories. When it was announced that there would be a Flash movie coming in 2018, some fans hopes were diminished when Ezra Miller was cast as Barry Allen, instead of Grant Gustin from the TV show. Producers promised that the TV show and film would be separate, and completely different takes on The Flash Character. That might not ring true if this rumored casting call sheet is real.
Rumors surfaced today in regards to casting calls for characters from the upcoming film. So far, here it what has been listed/guestimated based on casting call descriptions:
Iris West: Having Christiane Amanpour’s brains and Carrie Bradshaw’s style. An over-caffeinated doe. A reporter at The Central City Citizen.
Eobard Thawne: Central City’s Bill Gates. The smartest man in the room and he suffers from an advanced degenerative disease like Stephen Hawking.
Fred Chyre: a gruff detective who first meets Barry at the scene of a crime. Now they’re colleagues and the closest thing Barry has to a friend. Chyre is investigating the unusual death of someone at Thawne Laboratories.
Len Smart: Ex-military and turns out to be working for Thawne.
Jay Garrick: Former Central University professor who was fired for fringe science, and was working on the speed force program.
If some of those names found familiar, that’s because most of them appear in Season 1 of The Flash TV show. The only big difference is that in the television show Fred Chyre is Joe West’s partner, and was killed early on. Iris will probably be Barry’s love interest, Eobard will probably be the same Reverse-Flash nemesis for Barry. Len Smart, of course, would be Captain Cold, who plays not only on The Flash TV show but also on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow TV show. Of course, Jay Garrick on the show was first Earth-2’s Flash, but more recently revealed to be (spoiler) Professor Zoom. Garrick will probably play a different role than he does on the TV show.
It’s safe to say that many of the core characters from the TV show will be in the film, so the big question is just how different will be the film be from the content we see weekly on the small screen? There’s plenty of stuff from the source material that the show hasn’t touched yet. Plus it’s already rumored that Cyborg will also be a part of the film, so we’ll just have to wait and see in 2018!
