Anyone who grew up anywhere near the 90’s was at least peripherally aware of Power Rangers. Even if you weren’t a fan, you knew someone who was into it. Probably way too into it. Originally cobbled together by cutting some American actors into footage from the Japanese show Super Sentai, Power Rangers has had a total of 23 seasons on television in various incarnations and two feature films. Now, Power Rangers is being reimagined and updated and photos of their new superhero suits were just released to prove it.
These costumes really drive home the point that Lionsgate and Saban Films are trying to leave the campiness behind and create a legitimate superhero flick that will attract new fans as well as appeal to old fans. About the suits, which will be alien armor that crystallizes around their bodies, director Dean Israelite says:
“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”
Discussing how these suits differ from the myriad of other superhero suits on the big screen right now, production designer Andrew Menzies says:
“It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume. Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.”
Focusing on the original lineup of Power Rangers, Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, and RJ Cyler will star as Jason, Trini, Zack, Kimberly, and Billy, respectively. Elizabeth Banks has been cast as the villainous Rita Repulsa. The film is set for release on March 24, 2017.
