When it comes to the Universal Studios‘ Monsters shared universe, The Mummy is slated to be the Iron Man, the one that kicks it all off! Ironic considering that once upon a time, Tom Cruise was up for the part of Tony Stark, but now he’s the only hope standing between modern day London and a bandaged bad ass from Ancient Egypt. The Mummy is presently shooting in London, and while spy pics from the set are inevitable, Universal is trying to appease us with the official description of the film. There’s no spoilers here, and there’s really nothing surprising either, but what is affirmed below is that this is just the beginning.
Officially from Universal, here’s the official synopsis:
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
“New world.” There it is. The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein will all be ondeck next if The Mummy proves successful.
In The Mummy, Cruise plays a former special forces officer that gets absorbed into this new undead mystery. Cruise will be joined by Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe is rumored to be circling the part of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, who will also be somehow introduced in The Mummy. Alex Kurtzman, who’s overseeing the shared universe, is directing the film.
The Mummy will be in theaters everywhere on June 9, 2017.
