Much news has come to light about the final Hugh Jackman Wolverine film recently. Along with the sad news that this will be the final outing for Jackman as the Canadian bad-ass, we had casting news just a few days ago. Now we have confirmation from producer Simon Kinberg on the movie’s rating as well as a few hints regarding the plot of the film.
Kinberg confirmed the rumors of an R- rated Wolverine stating that this final outing would be ” a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.” Furthering his statement of a different Wolverine he went on to add that this movie will take place in the future which adds to the Old Man Logan story-line rumor.
If that plot is indeed the final chapter of Jackman’s version of Wolverine we could definitely be seeing him go out with a bang. Kinberg continued his description of the movie by saying that “It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone.” Again this only adds to the idea that Old Man Logan may indeed be the path they’re taking. That story line saw Wolverine in a future where the villains had won, and the western tone could easily describe that cinematic turn for the plot. While much of the plot is still rumor, and of course the return of Patrick Stewart as Professor X also remaining in the land of the rumor mill, the information we have confirmed is quite interesting.
While Marvel may be not banking on R rated comic characters even after the popularity of Deadpool, Wolverine is a natural fit to go past the PG-13 model we’ve seen so far. It’s great to hear confirmation that this last iteration will perhaps stretch the character beyond what we’ve already seen from the past 7 (!) times we’ve seen the Aussie whip out the claws. The production on this final film is now shooting and we can anticipate more information as things heat up and some on set pictures and video come to light. Until then, we can see Jackman as Wolverine for an 8th, penultimate time in X-Men: Apocalypse on May 27th.
