It’s been over ten years since Antonio Banderas donned the mask of Zorro. In that time, the world has seen all manner of financial crisis, grassroots uprisings, and evidence of a complex network of tax havens and shell corporations to hide the wealth of the wealthy. Perhaps more than ever before, the world needs the likes of Zorro, a protector of the common people against the tyranny of a corrupt establishment. Lantica Media and Sobini Films are going to deliver a Zorro for the 21st century and it appears as though it will be in the form of famed Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal.
Bernal is known for his intense work in movies such as Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries, and Rosewater. He has been in talks to play Zorro since the project was back at 20th Century Fox under the working title Zorro Reborn.
Now, the project will be produced by Lantica Media and Sobini Films and sold by Pantelion Films at the upcoming Cannes film market and will simply be titled Z. The film will be written and directed by Jonas Cuaron, who recently worked with Bernal on Desierto.
Here’s what Sobini Films’ Mark Amin had to say about the casting of Bernal:
“I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”
This Zorro story is said to take place in the near future and offer a reimagined take on the character. Nothing has been confirmed, but production may begin as early as this fall.
What do you think of Bernal as Zorro? Are you excited for a Zorro reboot?
