If you missed the foreshadowing in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice then you weren’t really paying attention because they were laying it on a little thick. Okay, a lot thick. A lot of that was for the benefit of the upcoming Justice League – Part One, setting up a bad guy so big that it will require the epic team up of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash. The assumption has been that said villain was Darkseid, ruler of the war world Apokolips, but what if it isn’t? What if the villain teased in BvS is a warm-up act for Darkseid?
According to Birth.Death.Movies, the villain of Justice League will be Steppenwolf, the 70s rock band behind such hits as “Born to Be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride.” Just kidding. Steppenwolf has been a long-time character in DC Comics, the henchman/nephew of Darkseid. Armed with a cable-snare and a funky-powered axe, Steppenwolf also has superhuman abilities including advanced strength, speed and reflexes, the kind of threat that would take a Justice League to disarm.
Birth.Death.Movies further explained that the creature that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) communes with in BvS deleted scene is also Steppenwolf, thus alleviating some of the confusion over who that creature was because it din’t look like Darkseid. This may be subjective, but perhaps the plot of the two Justice League movies is going to follow one from the New 52, where Steppenwolf arrives on Earth with parademons in the attempt to take it over in advance of Darkseid’s arrival. That would also fit with the nightmare/vision sequence from BvS where Batman sees himself in a post-apocalyptic future surrounded by parademons with an Omega symbol carved in the ground in the distance. Perhaps the studio plans on saving Darkseid for Justice League – Part Two.
Obviously, take all this insight with a grain of salt until its confirmed or disproved by official sources.
Justice League is presently shooting and will be in theaters everywhere in November 2017.
