As Fox and Marvel Studios decided to each have a Quicksilver in their films, fans scratched their heads a bit, while those who were unfamiliar with comics became confused – some audience members not even realizing that the Avengers: Age of Ultron and X-Men: Days of Future Past shared the character. There is no doubt that of the two, X-Men’s Quicksilver garnered more audience love after his on screen appearance but considering Hot Toys newest addition to their Marvel masterpieces, Age of Ultron’s Quicksilver is the one that fans will want to take home.
AoU director Joss Whedon certainly took some liberties with the source material when it came to his version of Quicksilver, who was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but considering his hands were tied fairly tightly when it came to his use of the character, Joss definitely did what he could. As audiences wait for the return of Quicksilver in the MCU (seriously, Maria Hill never would have even mentioned extended stasis if that wasn’t the path they plan to take), the folks over at Hot Toys have given fans of the character something to cheer in the meanwhile.
When you are a collector, the “wow” factor means almost as much as the collectability factor. Before the box is even open, Quicksilver demands attention, already inspiring those “oohs” and “ahhs”. With its neon yellow/green Avengers “A” symbol across the face of the standard sized Sideshow shoe box, there is no question that the product is part of a bigger collection. Sideshow chose to use a character still from the AoU film itself for the package image, which is understandable, but when you take into consideration the absolutely brilliant figure inside, perhaps the folks over at Sideshow could have displayed the statue proudly on the box but this is something that can be almost instantly dismissed. The foil stamped series logo placed directly in the center of the face of the box perfectly presents the AoU logo used by Marvel Studios throughout production of the film. Each side of the box comes with another foil stamp, one of the name “QUICKSILVER” and the other, a standard electrical symbol (or Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar symbol…always so easy to get those confused). A white pinstripe wraps the center of the box horizontally, effectively splitting the appearance of the box in two, while connecting each of the graphics on the packaging, presenting an adhesive appearance.
Packaging should always be an advertisement of what is inside. More than that, the packaging of a product should entice buyers to open up their wallet while shuffling towards the checkout like a zombie, mumbling, “I. Want. Collectible.”. In this case, Sideshow has again delivered. Is it quite as cool or effective as, say, the Kylo Ren packaging? No, that couldn’t be said but considering the character inside, the coolness factor is even that more impressive.
Once the inside package is removed from the slipcase, as with all Sideshow offerings, the accessories are neatly separated, presenting the buyer with the full picture even before unleashing the awesomeness inside. The bright yellow of the outside packaging is again used to offset the darkness of the character, making the mood of the packaging even that much more powerful.
As always, packaging is only as good as the product inside and in this case, it’s just as beautiful a story on the inside as the cover indicates.
From head to toe, this is an absolutely beautiful figure. Sideshow Collectibles / Hot Toys are not the cheapest memorabilia to collect and this statue is a prime example of why each and every collectible is worth every penny paid. The delicate care taken to present the perfect head of hair, windblown and silver, as it should be. The attention to detail in just the hair alone is amazing, as it appears that each and every strand is used to provide the exact amount of texture needed to bring the character to life. And that’s just the hair. When it comes to the real test of authenticity, the facial features are generally what make or break a collectible. In this case, it’s tough not to fall a little bit in love with Quicksilver when you look into that gorgeously sculpted face. The eyes are the perfect shade of silver and seem to have a bit of life right underneath their steely look. Really, it’s almost creepy just how realistic those eyes are. The face, though, is on a whole other level.
Now, as mentioned, those facial features make or break a figure and god DAMN, does this face make this one! Not only did the sculptors manage to capture Taylor-Johnson’s likeness – somehow, they managed to enhance his appearance, making the statue even more attractive than the actor who portrayed the character on screen. From the chiseled features to the intricate detail in every tiny little indication of facial hair, this statue demands attention. The scowl the creators captured is pure perfection, and there is absolutely no doubt that whether he is off to destroy some of the Iron Legion or off to grab a quick dozen eggs for his sister, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver obviously means business.
The figure comes with interchangeable hands for whatever pose you may be looking.
Hell, you can even make the
mutant enhanced individual pose with jazz hands.
As with most of Sideshow’s arsenal, Quicksilver is completely poseable and is sturdy enough to take multiple (careful) changes and poses, making the figure an almost perfect addition to any setting. When it comes to his clothing, the products are well made and may have been cut from the same cloth as the actual costume worn throughout the film. The shirt given to the figure doesn’t seem as if it would be all that comfortable to wear but, man, does it look cool! The pattern of the fabric gives the appearance almost a sheen and the reproduction of the stitching is absolutely top notch.
The pants feel as if they are made from something that would absolutely melt if put too close next to a hot lamp but, again, the look definitely works. Where the wardrobe goes from “meh” to “HOLY SHIT!” is in the shoes. Those shoes are absolutely perfect and there are plenty of buyers out there that wouldn’t mind if Hot Toys provided a free wearable pair with every statue. Sure, once you get super close, the plastic shoelaces lose a bit of the effect of the overall shoes but, man, they are a masterpiece.
As mentioned above, the figure comes along with three sets of hands, each having a different effect on the overall appearance of the figure. Other than the standard stand that comes along with every Hot Toys collectible, those are the only accessories that come along with the product. Honestly, there really isn’t much else that could be added to make this package more complete, other than perhaps a bloody, bullet hole ridden shirt that could be worn by the figure, but, hey, that can be forgiven. There are no light up elements or LED components but this isn’t a figure that needs them. Instead, every bit of thought that went into the creation of the piece was focused on the authenticity of the details and in this, they excelled.
When it comes to Hot Toys, for the most part, there is very little to complain about. Let’s not forget that the biggest problem with their Iron Legion figure from the same line is the name of the piece! That being said, there are a few things that could have benefited the piece just a bit.
First, those accessories. Yes, it’s cool to have several hands to choose from but unless you plan on having a shadow puppet show with Quickie, they aren’t all that necessary. On the other side of the coin, there wasn’t much for the character to do in the film, so including any accessory that could be considered iconic would be a tough task. The clothing looks amazing from afar but once the buyer (or an admirer) makes a move to touch the material, they will immediately feel that the costume could have used a bit more quality. Still, those shoes more than make up for any wardrobe faux pas.
There is no doubt that Hot Toys knows exactly what they are doing with their lines. The molds are approved by the licensing studio months, if not years, in advance of the property that they will be promoting and all of that forethought really shines through with Quicksilver. There really are so few missteps that this could be considered one of Hot Toys’ more successful accomplishments and for a company that specializes in winning, that’s saying a whole lot.
