If we were being kind, we would say that the first trailer for the rebooted Ghostbusters was met with mixed results. If we were being less kind, we would say that it didn’t sell a lot of people on the idea, and that a certain subset of critics were driven to the brink of insanity about it, downvoting the trailer on YouTube because girls can’t be Ghostbusters apparently. Maybe that’s why Sony chose to release the new trailer on Facebook instead. Indeed a second trailer has been posted this morning, and if you had legitimate criticisms of that first look at the film, this new trailer will likely not make a new case to get excited about it.
Posted via the Ghostbusters Facebook page, the new trailer walks much of the same ground as the previous one with four talented women starting their own professional paranormal investigation and elimination business. Perhaps in reaction to criticism from that first trailer, this is a more straightforward cut with the original Ghostbusters theme music, and lots of homages and references to the original film like a giant ghost cloud forming over a New York skyscrapper, Melissa McCarthy‘s line about “mass hysteria,” and cameos by Slimer and something that Deadline swears is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
From our perspective, there’s a couple of good chuckles in the new trailer, not including Chris Hemsworth‘s “We’re going to need a bigger boat” line, which is the 10,458th time that’s been used in a TV show or movie since 1975. There’s still a wait and see feeling with this Ghostbusters though. No one doubts the talents of director Paul Feig, and stars McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, but whether or not they’ll be able to overcome the long shadow of the original, and the sharp claws of the haters, is a question that remains unanswered.
But why don’t you see it for yourself? Here’s the new trailer for Ghostbusters:
Ghostbusters is in theaters everywhere on July 15.
