Franchises are a big deal today in the film industry. You have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Cinematic Universe, there are a ton of Transformer movies with ideas to incorporate other Hasbro names, and more. And now it looks like Lionsgate may be joining the club with a franchise of their own – the Power Rangers. There’s been very little regarding the new film, but it seems that Lionsgate CEO, Jon Feltheimer, is feeling pretty good about the movie that he made a statement earlier this week that the studio could potentially make upwards of seven other Power Ranger movies.
Of course, based on the images that have been released, this movie is definitely a step up from it’s television counterpart. There’s no more spandex and Rita’s been given an upgraded look. So visually, the movie looks like it could work, and fans are already on board (unlike another childhood franchise which never got off the ground for them). However, isn’t say you could do up to seven movies a bit of a stretch? Here’s the the quote from Feltheimer,
“We are really, really excited about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie. We could see doing five or six or seven.”
That’s it. It’s really vague but to the point. He sounds like Lebron James during his introduction to the Miami Heat when he spoke about winning seven championships with the team. Check that out here. Granted the Heat made it to the finals the four years he was with the team, but they only won two championships. They failed to reach the seven he was very confident about. That’s not to say that Feltheimer will do the same. For all anyone knows, this could be the beginning of another Fast and Furious phenomenon. They’re on their eighth movie and Vin Diesel has already confirmed release dates for the ninth and tenth installments.
It might be fun talking about movies two through seven in the future, but that first movie still has to get off the ground.
