HBO’s ‘Silicon Valley’ and ‘Deadpool’ star T.J. Miller has been added to the cast of ‘Ready Player One,’ Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the action-packed, sci-fi novel by Ernest Cline. In the Warner Bros./Village Roadshow produced film, Miller will take on the role of i-R0k, an online troll who searches and monitors the online forums of the wildly popular virtual reality MMO game Oasis.
‘Ready Player One’ focuses on a teenage outcast named Wade Watts who becomes obsessed with a virtual reality world called The Oasis which allows players to live out their fantasies and escape the daily drudgery. After the MMO game’s billionaire creator abruptly dies, he offers players his fortune as the prize in an easter egg hunt within The Oasis, with the winner emerging to take control of the entire company. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure using the name Parzival, and finds himself up against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything in The Oasis, as well as the real world, to get their hands on the fortune.
‘Ready Player One’ also stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Wade Watts/Parvizal. Actress Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) plays Sam, a Canadian blogger who is known in The Oasis as Art3mis and will become a love interest of Wade. Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story)is an executive of an Internet company who is attempting to gain control of The Oasis. Mark Rylance (The BFG) and Simon Pegg (Star Trek Into Darkness) have also signed on as James Donovan Halliday and Orgen Morrow, respectively, the co-creators of Oasis.
The film, currently in pre-production, will be directed by Steven Spielberg from a script by Ernest Cline and Zak Penn. Although originally intended for a December 15, 2017 release date, Disney’s announcement of releasing ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ had them change to March 30, 2018 where they wouldn’t be competing against the heavyweight franchise.
T.J. Miller is expected to reprise his role as Weasel in ‘Deadpool 2,’ which has been rumored to begin filming this fall.
