Word is making the Internet rounds that Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) is in early talks to join the cast of Marvel and Sony‘s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland made his first appearance as the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War alongside Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans), which placed Spider-man firmly in the Marvel Universe. Glover has ties to the Spider-Man mythos, he was an Internet favorite to play Ultimate’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, if the character ever made it to the big screen. He eventually voiced that character in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series. What character might he play in Spider-Man: Homecoming?
The answer might be as simple as Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man. While the comic book series has Peter Parker as the older of the two, Marvel could swap it around and have Glover play an older Morales, who could gain his powers after Peter Parker. Morales gained his powers from a slightly different genetically engineered spider that was treated with the OZ compound, created by Norman Osborn.
He has the same powers as Spider-Man, although his danger sense is not as focused as Peter’s and only triggers upon immediate danger. Morales also has two additional powers that Parker doesn’t have. He can camouflage himself like a chameleon and an electrical “venom strike” that can paralyze just about anyone with a simple touch.
It’s easy to see Marvel and Sony bringing the two together, but it could also be that Glover will play Morales without the powers. Perhaps as a teacher in Parker’s school, or a lab tech in the employ of Norman Osborn. I’d like to see Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but not as the Green Goblin, save that for later, build up to it.
One other thing, Netflix‘s Daredevil or Punisher needs to make an appearance in there somewhere. Not as some big plot point, but just Spider-Man running into them at some point.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens on July 7th, 2017.
