A new trailer for David Lowery‘s remake of the classic 1977 film Pete’s Dragon has been released by Walt Disney Pictures, as well as some brand new movie stills! If the trailer is any indication, Lowery (who has also directed Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) has taken major creative liberties in his retelling of this tale. It seems to be a completely different creature (no pun intended) than the original, with little to no likeness in the plot-line. The movie does look like a very interesting re-imagining, you just might have to remind yourself at the beginning that it’s the titular character of Pete you’re seeing; not Mowgli.
The CGI work looks amazing, and serves as the perfect vehicle to present Elliot (Pete’s best friend and…dragon,) to viewers. Ten year old Oakes Fegley (This is Where I Leave You) stars as Pete, and Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) plays park ranger Grace, who discovers the boy and his beastly best friend. Wes Bently (The Hunger Games) appears as local mill owner Jack, and Karl Urban (Star Trek Into Darkness) as his brother. This time around, Pete makes a friend of the human variety: a young girl named Natalie who is played by Oona Laurence; and Oscar-winner Robert Redford (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, All the President’s Men) rounds out the cast as Grace’s father.
Jim Whitaker handled producing, with Barrie Osborne as executive producer. Lowery and Toby Halbrooks tackled the screen play, and the Peter Jackson-founded visual effects company WETA Digital will be resurrecting the majestic Elliot. Take a look at the new trailer and stills below!
Pete’s Dragon is set to hit theaters Friday, August 12, 2016.
