The Nintendo stage at this year’s E3 convention was dominated by just two games. Along with a little more information about the new NX console coming out next year, Nintendo focused mainly on the upcoming Pokémon releases and the hugely anticipated new Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the Wild. Given that both franchises are decades old, the originality that have gone into the new games has certainly made Nintendo’s announements unique. Pokémon Go offers fans a foray into real world gaming, while almost everything about Breath of the Wild is groundbreaking.

Just to introduce the game, Nintendo have released more than an hour of gameplay footage, showcasing the detail and intricacy of the new game, which is due for release on Wii U and NX in early 2017. Complete with a running commentary from series producer Eiji Aonuma, it takes viewers on a journey through some stunningly beautiful aspects of Hyrule‘s natural landscape and shows off all the incredible new things you’ll be able to do while playing.

Link has an all new look in this game, with new clothes and accessories and hair.

There were some rumours, since the first look at the game’s trailer, that it might not even be him, that Nintendo might introduce a new character or maybe let gamers play as Princess Zelda herself. A lot of people were certainly excited about the prospect of a playable female protagonist.

Aonuma was questioned directly about this and answered,

“We thought about it and decided that if we’re going to have a female protagonist it’s simpler to have Princess Zelda as the main character. [But] if we have Princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?”

He went on to say that creating a game in which Link was actually female would “mess with the balance of the Triforce”, which made more sense to some fans than others.

While there are many gamers who will hold out hope for a female protagonist they can play in future games, it’s unlikely that it will stop people getting their hands on Breath of the Wild, which is easily one of the most immersive and complex Legend of Zelda games released to date. It boasts an extremely comprehensive world to explore and the kind of excellent attention to detail that gives us weapons that get worn out with use and health that can be restored by a decent dinner.
