Since the dawn of time, has there ever been a more deafening roar than the sound of millions of fans across the globe cheering in unison as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced their new deal to share everyone’s favorite webslinger, Spider-Man? Alright, perhaps that is a bit dramatic. However, there is no arguing the sheer excitement that comic book fans felt as they watched the absolutely perfect Tom Holland don the costume in Captain America: Civil War. While his predecessors (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) each had a bit of Peter Parker in them, Holland showed that with Marvel behind the wheel and a bit of perfect casting, Hollywood really could bring a faithful embodiment of the teenager-turned-superhero to life. Now that Holland’s solo Spidey outing, Spider-Man: Homecoming, is officially filming, the folks over at Just Jared have been able to grab the first set pics of Holland, Zendaya, and Tony Revolori in character.
Now, keep in mind, plot details are being held tightly under wraps, so who knows what is happening in the photos but, hey, it’s pretty great to see the young actors in action.
Let’s start with Peter Parker, himself, as Holland strolls through what may be the campus soccer field over at Midtown School of Science & Technology. Spider-Man fans will no doubt notice the evolution of Parker’s on screen high school from Midtown High School, to Midtown Science High School (Amazing Spider-Man) to the Homecoming campus of Midtown School of Science & Tech. What does this tell audiences about the film itself? Well, nothing, really, but it may lean towards a school of higher education for those that are intellectually gifted. You know, for the smart kids.
One thing that eagle-eyed fans will notice (actually, not sure they even have to be eagle-eyed to catch this) is that in the year since Civil War filmed, Holland has grown up a bit. Not to mention, he does seem to be a bit heavier/muscular than he appeared in Civil War. The 20 year old actor seemed like the perfect awkward teen the last time audiences saw him on screen, which was one of the best things about the casting. Let’s hope that the new physique doesn’t interfere with the interpretation of the character.
Now, here’s a bit of a more familiar look for Pater Parker! These images to give fans more of a reason to be confident than the field photos, so let’s hope the field look is for a specific purpose.
Disney actress/singer Zendaya will be taking the role of “Michelle”, which may or may not be the Michelle Gonzales from the comics. For those unfamiliar, Michelle and Peter are roommates who have a rather…interesting relationship. Chances are that Sony isn’t going to throw in any of their drunken fun, assuming it is Gonzales at all, but witnessing some of their not-quite-lover’s quarrels on the big screen could be a lot of fun.
Last but not least, Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori is seen in character as “Manuel”. This may or may not be a new character developed specifically for the film. He may be a friend, he may be a nemesis, depending on the conflicting reports out there. Those that have a love for being either completely vindicated in their foresight or failing miserably by trying to connect every character in Marvel’s stable to some big screen outing might be hoping that Manuel is none other than Hellfire Kid, Manuel Enduque. Would it be absolutely amazing? Of course. Is it likely? Nope. Still, you dreamers of dreams, keep on dreaming. You never know when you will be able to throw out an “I told you so”.
With filming underway, there is no doubt set photos of the many other talented actors that are part of the cast, including Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey, Jr., Michael Keaton, Kenneth Choic, Martin Starr, Donald Glover, and Logan Marshall-Green, will surface soon. And don’t forget, the film hits the world on July 7, 2017. Mark your calendars.
What do you think of the set photos? With all of the secrets Sony is holding with respect to the characters, who are you hoping to see in the film?
