While it’s true that sometimes movie rumors are proven correct in time, the overwhelming number of them are almost always false, and that goes doubly true for rumors about Star Wars movies. If we had a nickel for every false rumor about the prequel trilogy and The Force Awakens, we could make our own Star Wars movie (with Black Jack and hookers, or not), but this is the rare case where rumor is based on something resembling fact. For months we’ve heard that Darth Vader will be returning in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now we’ve got the official word that yes, he is indeed back.
Behold the new cover for Entertainment Weekly!
That’s Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and the mo-cap droid played by Alan Tudyk there on the cover, just above the words “Darth Vader is back!” No word yet on just how much he’s back, rumors have suggested everything from a cameo in hologram form to full-blown fight sequence involving the Dark Lord of the Sith. The article does affirm that Vader isn’t the movie’s main villain, but rather he will a pendulum doom hanging over the head of the real bad guy, the man in white, played by Ben Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn’s character is “eager to earn the favor of the Emperor – and avoid the wrath of his black-masked enforcer,” says EW.
EW also hinted that “a few classic [characters]” would be appearing in Rogue One. We know now that Vader is back, and the trailer also featured Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, but is EW implying that newly hired young Han Solo Alden Ehrenreich might be appearing too? I guess we’ll see.
The new issue of Entertainment Weekly is out Friday; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in the theaters everywhere this December 16.
