While promoting his latest film The Neon Demon, director Nicolas Winding Refn was asked about superhero films. It seems like every director nowadays wants to get involved in the billion-dollar genre. The Drive director previously had expressed interest in making a Wonder Woman movie. Unfortunately, it did not come to fruition for him, but DC will soon be coming out with Wonder Woman next year featuring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins. That doesn’t mean that Refn is done with wanting to make female-centered superhero films.
When talking about superhero films, Refn is still very much interested.
“God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.”
Knowing that Wonder Woman is off the table, Refn was asked what film he would like to tackle.
“What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”
With Batgirl reportedly being in a possible Harley Quinn movie, the possibility for her to have her own film exists. Refn has already made The Neon Demon, which features a film with a strong female protagonist, so making a Batgirl film might be a great look for the filmmaker. His visual style of the film could also be a big selling point as the director has a unique style in films such as The Neon Daemon and Drive.
He put it out there, it’s your call Warner Bros.
