Season four of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. promises new characters and the use of “old S.H.I.E.L.D technology.” Now, Marvel has teased audiences with the idea of Life Model Decoy’s for some time now. In The Avengers, Tony Stark tells Coulson he’s speaking to the “Life Model Decoy of Tony Stark,” and in Age of Ultron we saw Vision take on physical form, but Life Model Decoys have not been directly addressed. With teases like this many fans knew it was just a matter of time before the introduction of Life Model Decoys and it seems the wait might be over.
The season 3 finale gave more than just a hint of what was to come in season 4 with Dr. Holden Radcliffe’s last scene which showed him talking to AIDA and explaining that they were celebrating because “today’s you’re birthday.” Presumably, he meant that literally by giving AIDA a physical form inside a Life Model Decoy, which would be a first for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. So now AIDA is expected to be a recurring role on the show and is described as “very attractive,” moves naturally and speaks much the way Jarvis does, formally but not awkwardly.
For fans not familiar with Life Model Decoys, these are essentially robotic clones that are used as a surrogate for a real person (or in the case of AIDA, as a body for an artificial intelligence). This would enable an agent to send out their robotic double into dangerous places or missions, incurring no risk to themselves. The benefits of including LMDs in the show are obvious. LMDs are known for being stronger and more durable than their human counterparts which could mean fewer character deaths. The ways in which these robotic clones could be abused is just as obvious and opens up many possibilities for evil doing.
In addition to LMDs, and all the possibilities that opens up, are two new characters described as Latino brothers. One in a wheelchair and the other who is referred to as “the most dangerous person in the room.” Whether or not these two are friends or enemies of S.H.I.E.L.D. has not yet been confirmed.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 airs on ABC Tuesday nights at 10/9c, starting on September 20, 2016.
