The Power Rangers are back. Lionsgate just released character posters featuring the actors from the film. This is big news for fans of a franchise that started over 23 years, when producer Haim Saban took footage from Japan’s Toei Company’s tokusatu series, Super Sentai. Using that footage intermixed with some original live-action scenes show, Saban found himself with a long-running franchise. It was a great setup for him: Use the Super Sentai footage, then dub in the American actors’ voices and – voila! – the Power Rangers were born. The show was an instant hit and became a staple of the Fox Network’s children’s programming; despite some objections from parents and other groups regarding violence depicted on the show, its popularity grew, and there were action figures, costumes, comics and movie spin-offs.
Rumors of a new feature film have been floating around for some time and some have given up until Lionsgate’s announced that a movie was indeed in the works. Then, it was announced that Elizabeth Banks would be playing the film’s villainess, Rita Repulsa. A few weeks ago, it was announced that Bryan Cranston would appear as Zordon, the alien who oversees the Power Rangers’ missions and monitors potential threats to Earth. Cranston has connections to the original show, since he was one of the actors providing voice-overs for the alien monsters. With Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) helming the film, people took notice and realized that the studio was keen on assembling topnotch talent.
What sets this film apart from the franchise’s earlier incarnations is that the Power Rangers’ suits are apparently alien symbionts – like Spider-Man’s costume he had acquired during the Secret Wars – but are biomechanical in nature. So, that is a potentially cool twist.
The character posters feature Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy and Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini.
With these new costumes and actors such as Banks and Cranston, this new Power Rangers film has a lot going for it. The film is set for a March 24, 2017 release.
