Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the hotly-anticipated sequel to 2014’s surprising smash success from Marvel Studios, has just unveiled a new concept art from Andy Park. The sequel, which is again directed by James Gunn (known also for Slither and Super), is expected to continue the story of Star-Lord and compatriots defending the galaxy-at-large from Thanos (and his minion horde). The images show off Mantis, the newest member of the team’s screen adaptation, as well as a Baby Groot without his flowerpot; this new look at the team can be seen after the break below.
Here’s the official plot synopsis of the film as released by Marvel Studios:
“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
The outline of course mentions the plot of Star-Lord finding out more about his father, which is long-rumored (and since more or less confirmed) to be played by legendary action film star Kurt Russell; however, James Gunn has confirmed that Star-Lord’s dad will not be taking the form of J’Son, his father in the comics, instead opting for an entirely original story to bring to the screen.
The synopsis mentions old foes ‘becoming new allies’ (explaining Nebula and Yondu‘s appearance in the art), and fan-favorite characters coming to the screen. While this may be a simple reference to the character Mantis, it may in fact play into another rumor surrounding the movie that the ‘original, classic’ Guardians team (or at least one member other than Yondu) would be making an appearance.
At least we have this awesome new concept art to tide us over until the film comes out on May 5, 2017.
