The third alternate reality Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond is already off to a semi-good start: reviews have been good for the upcoming film. After all, this new series brought back Star Trek into the public consciousness with the first reboot. This is partially due to the directing of the first film by director JJ Abrams. While Abrams moved on to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he remained a producer for the upcoming film and is still involved in the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek Beyond currently has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s safe to say that based on at least the critical consensus if the box office plays out the same, the film will be guaranteed to get a sequel.
Recently there was a press conference for the upcoming Star Trek film and Abrams was asked about the possibility of a fourth film in the series.
“Yes, and there’s something that hopefully we’re figurative minutes away from talking about. But the answer is 100 percent, yes, and it’s incredibly exciting.”
Now of course, Paramount is’ stupid. If the third film performs as successfully as it hopes to, we’ll definitely be seeing a fourth film on the horizon. There may be problems scheduling-wise. Actress Zoe Saldana will be tied in both the upcoming Avatar films as well as possibly be in upcoming Marvel films (Avengers: Infinity Wars and Guardians Vol 3 maybe?) for quite some time. Of course, the untimely death of actor Anton Yelchin can also play a role in story development as well. With Abrams doing production for the upcoming Star Wars film and possibly this upcoming Star Trek film, all the stars have to align right for this one.
