It’s going to be a long time till we see a new live-action Batman movie; 2020 or 2021 at the earliest, so it’s going to be up to The LEGO Batman Movie to tide us over. No problem because LEGO Batman was easily one of the best parts of The LEGO Movie, but can he stand on his own, in his own movie, in the shadow of Ben Affleck, Christian Bale and all the big screen Batmen who’ve come before. The answer you’re looking for, especially from the looks of this new trailer, is yes. Released at San Diego Comic Con yesterday, here’s the latest look at The LEGO Batman Movie.
The emphasis of the trailer this is on Robin (voiced by Michael Cera), an orphan accidentally adopted by Batman (Will Arnett) even though he was being sarcastic. Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) insists that Batman take responsibility for the boy and spend less time hanging out in the dark, being up all night and dressed in black, but Batman instead takes the teen on a wild, seatbelt-less ride through Gotham fighting the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) and hanging out with Batgirl (Rosario Dawson). So shall we take a look? The password is “Na-na-na-na, Na-na-na-na, Batman!”
Not bad, huh? And the line, “No, Bruce Wayne lives in Batman’s attic,” may be one of the most astute observations into Batman’s psyche was ever made. Whether or not the rest of the film is as sharp (it probably is) we’ll have to wait and see. The LEGO Batman Movie will be in theaters everywhere on February 10, 2017.
