Lucasfilm Plans Even More Han Solo Films

In a move that should come as no surprise to anyone, The New York Daily News reports that Lucasfilm and Disney are in talks to produce more Han Solo movies. In what has become the norm in Hollywood, Alden Ehrenreich, the recently confirmed casting choice for young Han Solo, has been quietly signed on for a three film contract, which if it comes to fruition will no doubt make many fans giddy with happiness.

The contract is, of course, no guarantee that there will be more films. Actors signing multi movie contracts is pretty standard procedure for big franchise films these days, but a lot will depend on how well the movie does once released. It seems like a good bet that audiences will be more than happy to throw more money at Disney for more Star Wars movies. It would seem that Lucasfilm and Disney are fairly confident the film will do well and are already making plans for the future. The New York Daily reports an insider saying:

“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.”
With luck, this means that there will be plenty of Star Wars films for many years to come. As well as an opportunity for Lucasfilm to tell stories that haven’t been told on the big screen yet. And with the chucking out of the Expanded Universe into the realm of “Legends”, there is no telling where those stories might go.
The standalone Han Solo movie is written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan and will serve as a sort of origin story for everyone’s favorite smuggler. It will show audiences how Han became the man he was when he agreed to transport a naive farm boy, an old man and two droids across an Imperial blockade.
The as yet untitled Han Solo film is schedule to premiere May 25, 2018
