With a little more than a month before it premieres, Marvel’s Luke Cage has been in overdrive! The third Marvel/Netflix series will follow the titular character as he heads to Harlem, NY after the events of Jessica Jones. They recently release a new trailer at SDCC and we are more than excited for the new show. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has promised that the show will be unique, deal with many issues surrounding the urban community, and even compared it to The Wire.
Coker also stated that music will be a big part of the show as well. Because it will be set in Harlem, NY where music has always been a part of the community, Luke Cage is promising to have a killer soundtrack. The teaser trailer featured hip hop artist Nas’s song “Made You Look” and the just released trailer featured hip-hop artist Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” The composed score for the TV show will be done by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Young has done the score for Black Dynamite and Muhammad was the music producer for hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Needless to say, this show will have a strong hip-hop influence.
Continuing the hip-hop influence of the show, Coker recently revealed that the title of each episode will be based on a song by hip-hop group Gang Starr. Coker just revealed the titles for the first three episodes which are based on songs by Gang Starr.
