Last season Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended on several cliffhanger’s including Daisy’s new career as the vigilante Quake, the revelation of Life Model Decoys, and the fact that Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) is no longer director of S.H.I.E.L.D. So who is the new director? Is it Tony Stark? Ha! You must be living in a world where someone in charge would genuinely want to make Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a legitimate part of the greater movie universe it’s supposed to be in rather than just paying lip service. No, the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director is someone we haven’t met before, at least in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Batman.
Just kidding. It”s not really Batman, but it kind that sounds a lot like him. Jason O’Mara, who’s voiced Batman in a number of recent DC Animated movies including Justice League: War, Batman: Bad Blood, and the upcoming Justice League Dark, will be playing the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the fourth season of the ABC series. O’Mara may also be recognizable for playing the dad on Terra Nova, and as a “1973 NYPD detective” in Life on Mars, but now, as the new director, we don’t know the exact identity of his S.H.I.E.L.D. character except for one vague hint. Marvel Studios said in its release that O’Mara is playing “a character whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s.”
“Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency,” added Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel’s TV division. “Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.”
Sounds interesting, but that doesn’t answer the question who is O’Mara going to be playing? Some are suggesting it’s Clay Quatermain, but he became a part of the comics in the 1960s. Maybe O’Mara is secretly Namor, the Sub-Mariner, or the World War II version of the Human Torch (which would fit in nicely with the LMDs since that Torch was a robot). We will likely have to waiting until the season premiere of S.H.I.E.L.D. next month before we get our answer.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four premieres Tuesday September 20 at 10 pm on ABC.
