Earlier this week, we got a good look at a new billboard advertising Transformers: The Last Knight in Times Square. Like a lot of Transformers advertising, it makes you forget that the previous movies were actually not very good, because Michael Bay is a ninja with marketing. (Or, the more likely, he’s got a ninja doing his marketing.) So here we go again, Bay’s people are doing their voodoo on us, and today the spell is cast with the introduction of another major Transformers character. Fans of the 1986 Transformers: The Movie take note because Hot Rod has been added to the robot cast of the upcoming sequel.

For those of you who don’t know your Transformers lore, Hot Rod was introduced as a happy-go-lucky Autobot that was just chillin’ out max when the Decepticons attacked Autobot City on Earth, and though Megatron dies in the attempt, Optimus Prime also dies from battle damage. The Matrix of Leadership passes to Ultra Magnus, but it’s eventually captured by the planet-sized Unicron, and when Hot Rod finds himself alone fighting the resurrected Megatron (as Galvatron) inside Unicron, he makes himself worthy of the Matrix and is transformed into Rodimus Prime.
So is that a hint? Might Rodimus Prime be the last knight the title of the movie refers to? Might Optimus be forced to pass on the Matrix while battling a resurrected Megatron? Of course this comes from the same guy that made a movie featuring Dinobots all over all the advertising, and they were only in the Age of Extinction for like 20 minutes of its three hour running time. Will Hot Rod meet the same fate? Probably, but we’ll have to wait and see for certain.
Transformers: The Last Knight will be in theaters everywhere on June 23, 2017.
