Although Suicide Squad was not a hit with the critics, the film had an astounding opening weekend. The critically-panned film had a record-setting opening weekend of $132 million. Audience reactions have been somewhat mixed, but with such a strong opening weekend, it’ no surprise that there is already talk of a sequel surrounding the bad guys of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The cast is already signed for multi-film commitments, so who knows what will happen in a potential sequel. Director David Ayer has a few ideas as well.
The cliffhanger at the ends with all the members of Task Force X ending back in the Belle Reve secret prison (with their requested special privileges) with The Joker makes a surprise entrance busting into the prison to rescue his beloved Harley Quinn. Director David Ayer has a few ideas for where the film can go afterwards.
“We shot that during the first week of photography… I don’t want to give stuff away but it’s that anything is possible, and that’s the thing, for as much control and command Amanda Waller has over these guys, at the end of the day they’re supervillains and they’re gonna do supervillain stuff.
Plus, the Joker/Harley relationship just seemed like the right button for the movie, it opens so many doors if another one of these were ever to turn up under a rock somewhere.”
When discussing what Suicide Squad members may show up on other DCEU properties, or having a direct sequel to Suicide Squad Ayer was keeping that relatively close.
“I don’t know, there may be a cocktail napkin with some scribbles on it somewhere, I don’t know.”
