It’s here! It’s finally here! The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer that many saw at the Star Wars celebration in London, the one that the internet couldn’t get their hands on, finally debuted on television during the 2016 Summer Olympics, and it did not disappoint. It was basically a more in-depth version of the teaser that was released back in April; viewers got more from Forest Whitaker‘s character, Saw Garrera, as well as the rest of the cast which included Felicity Jones, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, and Wen Jiang.
“The world is coming undone. Imperial flags reign across the galaxy.” It’s obvious that Saw has seen some real action since fans last saw him during the Clone Wars. Not only does he sound like a very tired man, but he sounds defeated as he speaks to Jones’ character Jyn Erso. Audiences also get a bit more out of Diego Luna’s character. It seems that he’s not initially assigned to Jyn Erso since he tells her that he wants to help with her mission. And based on his tone in the trailer, it looks like he’s been secretly recruiting for the rebellion. Maybe he’s been getting the help of people that the rebellion would rather not associate themselves with such as criminals and others like them. Case in point – Jyn Erso.
Wen Jiang’s character looks like he could be a bounty hunter especially based on the gear he’s wearing. In the trailer he says, “They destroyed our home. I fight the Empire now.” So at one point, he may have fought along side of them or worked for them for a price. Either way, he’s on Jyn side for this film. Donnie Yen’s character doesn’t seem to have any connection to the Force, but does believe in it in some capacity. And, finally, fans get to hear Alan Tudyk as K-2SO for the first time. He’s got a Galactic Empire symbol on him and sounds eerily like C-3PO.
The rest of the trailer shows more of the scenes that were featured in the teaser. There is, in particular, an awesome shot of a rocket being shot by Jiang at an AT-AT. It doesn’t look like it destroys the vehicle, but certainly does some damage. And, of course, the trailer comes to an epic conclusion with the confirmation that everyone was waiting for, the back of Darth Vader’s helmet along with some heavy breathing.
In addition to seeing more of the characters many are curious about, the overall cinematography of the film looks amazing. It’s possible that this could be not only a great Star Wars film, but a great film in general among all of it’s peers. Take, for example, the shot of the X-Wing flying through the open canyon. Then you have the battle scenes on the beach which can be compared to a futurist version of Saving Private Ryan. There is a lot more that has yet to be seen. December can’t come soon enough.
Well, there you have it. What did you think of the Rogue One trailer?
