With No ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ Spinoff On The Docket This Fan Trailer Might Be The Closest Thing We’ll Ever Get
While there have been plenty of rumors and speculation that Disney and Lucasfilm would get around to telling the tale of Obi Wan Kenobi’s self enforced exile to Tatooine as the personal protective shadow of baby Luke Skywalker, there’s no spinoff film on the Star Wars docket. All those years in the desert, there is certainly a story to tell there, perhaps more. Disney might not be thinking about a Kenobi spinoff, but fans sure are. Fans like Rich Williamson, who put together an interesting fan film trailer for a Kenobi movie, featuring actual footage of Ewan McGregor from his recent film Last Days in the Desert.
Ewan McGregor is on record saying:
I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a—I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.
This trailer even opens the door for the Kenobi/Ray fan theory where Ray is Kenobi’s granddaughter. There is a Symmetry there, Kenobi trains Anakin, then Anakin’s son, who in turn trains the granddaughter of Kenobi.
Now that should prove there’s some story to tell, hopefully someone out there is listening, someone who can make it happen. Until then, you can also check out John Jackson Miller’s novel, Kenobi. It covers most of what you would expect, Ben’s guilt over Anakin, thoughts of being the last Jedi, and how hard it is to keep a low profile, even on Tatooine.
If you’re wondering where that footage came from, here’s the trailer for Last Days in the Desert which was released in May of this year and should be hitting premium channels and on demand soon.
