A few weeks ago at San Diego Comic Con, it was announced that Brie Larson would be taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel in the Marvel Studios film of the same name. But there’s more than enough room in the Marvel Universe for another female superhero, right? So when Anna Kendrick took to Twitter earlier this summer, and said, “Hey, why don’t I be Squirrel Girl?” at the behest of her brother, and the reaction was positive. But if Kendrick wants to be Squirrel Girl, she’ll need support from inside Marvel Studios, people of esteem and influence, like Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
Not so coincidentally, Yahoo! Movies happened to come across the Russo Brothers recently and asked them about Kendrick’s chances of suiting up as the greatest of Great Lake Avengers. “It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans,” they said.
Perfect. Squirrel Girl is in! Of course that means that the number of characters in Avengers: Infinity War just increased from 67 to 68, and Joe Russo said of his brother Anthony that he’d “die from exhaustion” if one more character was added to the film. If Squirrel Girl were to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s doubtful it would be in the climactic third chapter of the Avengers series, but never say never. “That’s not to say we’re not going to introduce a new character,” added Anthony Russo.
Another interesting angle to this Squirrel Girl question though is that Kendrick has some competition for the role; recently Shannon Purser of Stranger Things fame has also expressed interest in the part, which is an impressive casting showdown for a character that’s supposedly on the C-list. Given all that, it seems like only a matter of time before Squirrel Girl shows up in the movie in some form. Stay tuned.
