When Marvel first announced in 2014 that they were going to be making yet more Avengers movies, they originally said that the next two Avengers movies would be filmed back to back and be titled Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1 and Part 2 respectively. Now it seems that they have changed gears. IGN spoke with Joe and Anthony Russo about the upcoming films to explain, at least in part, the reason for the change.
The reason according to Russo is that the two movies, while they will share some features, are going to be two very different movies. It has been speculated that the original reason for making the movies a two-part deal was to show Thanos and his quest for the final Infinity Stones and then part two would be the actual Infinity War. Looks like that might not be the case anymore. Russo explained:
We wanted the movie to be very different and distinctive, you know. There’s certainly cross-pollination between characters and some story-arcs, but you know, the first movie is very clearly Avengers: Infinity War and, in time, we will reveal what the second film is.
The title of the fourth Avengers movie has yet to be announced with Russo only saying that “you’ll learn that, but not for quite some time.” This is good news for fans hoping to avoid as many spoilers as possible as it is not uncommon for movie titles (and soundtracks too for that matter) to reveal spoilers about the upcoming plot. However, there is always room for speculation. Marvel has frequently pulled movie plots from major events in the comics and it’s entirely possibly they will do the same thing with Avengers 4.
Russo has stated that these upcoming Avengers films will be a kind of culmination of everything that has happened since Iron Man.
I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie.
This presents some rather tantalizing ideas on where the story goes from here. Any fan theories on what the movie plot will be?
