You might remember that Sir Ian McKellen conducted the civil wedding of his long time friend Sir Patrick Stewart and his then fiance Sunny Ozell back in 2013. It looks like McKellen was in high demand that year as word is making the Internet rounds that he was offered one million pounds (About $1.5 million dollars at the time) to officiate another wedding, which he turned down. Why would he turn down 1.5 million dollars?
In a recent chat with The Daily Mail, Mckellen revealed that he had been offered 1 million pounds to do a wedding, but turned it down because he would have had to dress as Gandalf. McKellen said:
I was offered one-and- a-half million dollars to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing but I had to go dressed as Gandalf.
I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.
Hard to imagine turning down that kind of money for an afternoon’s work, but when Sir Ian McKellen puts his foot down, that foot ain’t moving. The Daily Mail went digging and turned up some interesting additional information about the offer. It turns out that Sean Parker (Napster, Facebook) was behind the offer. He and fiancee Alexandra Lenas said their vows in a lavish 9.8 million dollar Tolkien themed wedding, that would have been topped off with McKellen conducting the ceremony.
