When it was revealed that the directors most famous for directing the television comedy Arrested Development were going to direct the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, it was met with a healthy dose of skepticism. However after knocking it out of the park with Captain America: The Winter Soldier they earned some breathing space and trust from Marvel fans. The next film they were given was the megahit Captain America: Civil War which has received critical, fan, and commercial praise. Now the Russo Brothers have effectively taken over Joss Whedon as the showrunners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will be directing the next two Avengers sequels: Avengers: Infinity War and the Untitled Avengers film (formerly known as Avengers Infinity War Part 2). The two brothers are currently preparing for a nine-month shoot for the two upcoming Avengers sequels but had the chance to promote the Captain America: Civil War DVD/Blu-Ray release.
The directing duo talked about how the events of Civil War have shaped what will come soon in the upcoming Infinity War sequel, specifically the Avengers team dynamic. Because Zemo was successful in his mission of fracturing the team, the entire galaxy may be at risk when Thanos gets his hands on the Infinity Gauntlet.
“Part of what excited us about how we could end Civil War, and the fact that there is this divide between Cap and Tony and their relationship that will be very, very difficult for them to ever repair, the fact that the Avengers are divided in two and half of them are now wanted by the law and the other fact are not too comfortable with their fate moving forward, and the fact that Thanos and the Infinity War are coming — the greatest threat the universe has ever seen is going to come at the moment where the Avengers are arguably at their lowest, at their worst, at their least strong and most divided since they’ve been formed — that for us was a very exciting place for us to be as storytellers because of the vulnerable nature of our heroes in that kind of a situation. For us, as we move forward into Infinity War, the condition of the Avengers is very much an important part of how that story starts and what dangers they face moving forward.” –Joe Russo
The Russo Brother also talked about how they are building on the previous films every single time, playing the groundwork for the next film.
“From the point of view of Joe and I, we think about all of these movies as a continuity. The story that we told in Winter Soldier set the basis for the story we told in Civil War, and the story that we told in Civil War is again laying the groundwork for the story that we’re going to tell in Avengers: Infinity War. For us, there’s a narrative continuity between the movies, and each movie is in many ways setting the stage for the ones that follow. For us, we have a very specific through-line for all those films.” –Anthony Russo
With the success of each film, the more we expect from these two directors. They have already knocked it out of the park for their first two MCU films. Their work on Civil Wars shows they can effectively handle an ensemble superhero film which is very difficult. Let’s hope they can continue to impress us with these upcoming films.
