It is only fair that a movie about one of Marvel’s most powerful female heroes, gets a powerful female director. Marvel’s ‘Captain Marvel’, starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, has narrowed down the field to a short list of possible directors to helm the film.
The short list includes Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria.
Niki Caro earned praise for directing the critically acclaimed Whale Rider while Lesli Linka Glatter is known for her work on award winning TV shows such as Homeland and Mad Men. Scafaria took a different route as she started off as a screenwriter for Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. In 2012, Scafaria changed roles as she took the director’s chair in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
Caro’s name has been tossed around before as a possible director for Marvel’s first movie to star a solo female superhero, however it’s still too early to tell if there is a front runner.
The character herself is a powerhouse within the Marvel universe. As a member of the U.S. Air Force, Carol Danvers gained her powers after an explosion where she ended up with alien DNA fused with her own. This imbued her with the powers of flight, super strength, higher resilience, increased stamina, and the ability to absorb and project energy. Captain Marvel has been a member of the Avengers and fought the likes of the Galactus and Apocalypse. She has a storied past that began in the 60’s and continues to this day.
While Marvel appears to be narrowing down the field of directors, the movie remains several years away. There is no official word on the story, but by some reports, Marvel may adjust Captain Marvel’s origin story. One only has to look at the success of Guardians of the Galaxy to see that Marvel has no reason to worry about telling a story that involves aliens.
Captain Marvel soars into theaters on March 8th, 2019.
