It’s always exciting to get news from the guys and girls at Lucasfilm, and even more exciting to get news of a new character within the Star Wars Universe. So may we present to you the latest member of the SWU, featuring in the upcoming Rogue One : A Star Wars Story…C2-B5

C2-B5

I know what you’re all thinking, C2 looks like the evil twin of R2-D2. That might not be too far from the truth. What we do know about this Astromech droid (from our friends at The Star Wars Show) is that he is an imperial droid. Unlike droids under the Rebel Alliances – Imperial Astromechs don’t enjoy the same liberties afforded by the Rebels. These include memory wipes, possibly to protect sensitive Imperial data.

“As you many know the Galactic Empire relies on astromech droids to maintain its machinery, but unlike the Rebel Alliance, Imperial technicians do not grant their droids independence and subject them to frequent memory wipes to keep them subservient.”

The film centers around resistance fighters and their mission to steal the plans of the Empires newly built battle station. Speculation about C2’s involvement in that mission are already under way, however sources close to the project are keeping tight lipped about the droids involvement in the overall plot. It is worth noting that later in the timeline, those same Death Star plans are entrusted by Princess Leia to another Astromech who bares a striking resemblance : R2-D2.

The droids storyline could be similar to that of fellow ‘RO:ASWS’ droid K-2SO, who as we already know was an Imperial security droid which was captured and reprogrammed by the Rebellion’s Captain Cassian Andor. Will the two droids share screen time reminiscent to that of R2 and 3PO?
We also know that the droid is deemed important enough for Hasbro to unveil a toy of C2 within it’s upcoming AT-ACT playset at the Sand Diego Comic Con in July. Although the 3.75-inch toy was not identified when it was packaged along with Jyn Erso and the walker’s pilot. As the release date draws near expect to see more merchandise rolling out with C2-B5 as a key player.

Rogue One : A Star Wars Story merchandise and toy range will hit stores on September 30th and the film will open in theatres on December 16, 2016.
