Guardians of the Galaxy is a perfect comic book movie! It truly is one of the most unique and delightful films Marvel has created to date. It has all the heart, humor, heroics, and a dash of unhinged weirdness every good superhero movie needs. Its success is quite a marvel (pun intended) given its bizarre array of characters. A movie about a quick-witted earth man/pirate teaming up with an assassin, a destroyer out for revenge, an enhanced raccoon and a humanoid tree shouldn’t have worked… but it did.
A ton of excitement and hype surrounds the upcoming sequel. It’s a lot of pressure for director James Gunn and the rest of the cast and crew to match or exceed what the first film achieved but they’re doing it. In July, at San Diego Comic-Con, James Gunn brought his cast to Hall H, where they unleashed the first trailer that included an unexpected surprise. The footage revealed that Star-Lord’s dad was Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell.
This footage is not ready to be shown to the masses, as the visual effects were unfinished and not ready to be seen by the public. However, it sounds like Gunn is working on releasing something soon. Groot voice actor Vin Diesel, saw a new cut of footage shown at Comic Con. He took his reaction to Facebook Live, and well, you’ll see…
During the first few minutes of this Facebook video, Vin Diesel is left speechless, before director James Gunn explains that they just watched an extended version of the footage that debuted at Comic-Con. After feeling all verklempt, Diesel composed himself and gave nothing but high praise to Gunn and the group of co-workers he gets to call friends:
“It’s weird having a friend like James Gunn, because he’s your friend, and then you watch what he does and you go ‘My friend is a genius.’ Not just great in a particular profession, but a genius, someone who takes 100 plus blank pages and creates something that blows your mind, from the typewriter to the screen. I’m blown away because I not only want to see the whole movie now, I want you to see the whole movie.”
The actor went on to compare the experience of watching this footage to seeing “Santa Clause in September, because you want Christmas to be tomorrow.” Both James Gunn and Vin Diesel also claim that all of the returning cast members have “upped their game,” while giving a special point of interest to Michael Rooker, who returns as the Ravager Yondu, saying that he’s even more of a show stealer this time.
The duo went onto say some remarks like how Chris Pratt was “born” to play Star-Lord, while also geeking out about Kurt Russell and what it’s like to work with the living legend.
Vin Diesel has been in the news lately being called out by Fast and Furious co-star The Rock for poor onset behavior. Diesel has been labeled as being a bit of an on-set Diva, showing up to work late and holding up production. You don’t see any of that “Diva” behavior here. In interviews and other online videos, Diesel has always come off as humble and genuine. You see that here as well. His reaction and heart are as genuine as they come. Definitely ups the excitement and anticipation for Guardians of the Galaxy 2
