Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) continues to grow his super hero television series empire with a new series Black Lightning. FOX has committed to a pilot for the new series written by Salim and Mara Brock Akil (The Game, Being Mary Jane). What will the new series look like?
Variety is reporting that the series will star a long retired Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning. He returns to his superhero roots when he needs:
…to help his daughter and a star pupil navigate the tough streets and late adolescence.
His daughter, Anissa Pierce goes by the code name Thunder and has these abilities:
- Density Control: She has the ability to increase the mass of her body while preserving volume, which effectively increases her density.
- Invulnerability: She can increase the density of her body to make herself immovable and completely invulnerable.
- Energy Projection: She can create massive shock waves just by stomping the ground.
There is mention of a star pupil, and while everyone hopes it might be Static Shock, the odds are long on it actually coming together considering that Static Shock has long been rumored to get his own series starring Jaden Smith. On the other hand, all that talk has not been confirmed and without a series in hand, the rights holders might be open to seeing Static Shock on the small screen.
In the animated version Black Lightning had two daughters, Thunder and Lightning.
Could the series introduce an unknown sibling that develops super powers? That would certainly give the series that family issues that Berlanti’s CW super hero shows thrive on.
