One of the most anticipated Phase 3 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the sequel to the surprise breakout 2014 summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy. From one month to the next, the title went from obscure comic to worldwide blockbuster franchise that is giving The Avengers definite competition. Fans can’t wait to see the team, so much so that those who were able to catch what Marvel showed in Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con 2016 are clamoring for it to be released NOW. But with that not being anywhere in sight, we at least take solace in James Gunn dropping little nuggets of info on what to expect for the upcoming film, Chris Pratt adds to the hype train, and Steven Tyler wants in on GOTG 3. Oh lawrd….let’s dive in to this week’s news.
Even though Vol. 2 will feature a collection of new characters (including Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet), it’s one of the returning faces who’s poised to be the breakout. Following his self-sacrifice in the first film, Groot is back as adorable Baby Groot, a toddler-sized sapling that can stand comfortably on Rocket Raccoon’s shoulder in action sequences. What a twist?!? But while we know that Groot is not back to his former size, it has had many ask questions about how the character will be affected: including the sound of his voice and whether or not he’ll retain Adult Groot’s memories. On the latter, Gunn has given us the deets:
During one of his famed Facebook Q&A sessions, Gunn covered some frequently asked questions about the upcoming movie. When asked directly how Baby Groot compares to the version from the first installment, the director was short and frank when addressing the character’s memories:
“Is baby Groot the same as Groot, or Groot’s son?
Gunn: It’s complicated.
Does he have Groot’s memories?
So in the event that this ‘complication’ has Baby Groot starting from scratch, it’s definitely an emotionally devastating development that makes his death scene in the first Guardians all the more permanent. Some of you may be saying, “Well, duh.”, but that sapling for many wasn’t seen as an entire reboot, but as a unexpected save. Of course, now that this has been said, there are clues in the first film that hint Groot wouldn’t be the same after his sacrifice. Shortly before proclaiming“We are Groot,” Rocket kept asking why Groot was doing this, as if he knew what would happen. Additionally, he didn’t seem all that shocked when the sentient tree started to grow back, so maybe this is something Groot has done before. That would be an interesting development and give their dynamic a deeper meaning. This matter won’t get cleared up soon, that’s for sure. It’s expected that the first official Vol. 2 trailer will be released in conjunction with Marvel’s Doctor Strange in November.
The three months of patient torture don’t get any easier as Chris Pratt divulged a bit more about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Pratt was up in Toronto for the premiere of The Magnificent Seven at TIFF, and The Toronto Sun (via Cinema Blend) talked with the actor about the upcoming sequel. And while he couldn’t divulge any new information about the movie that we didn’t already know, he did offer this little bit of hype:
“It’s a fabulous script. I think it’s going to be- I’m not using hyperbole, here – I think it’s going to be the biggest spectacle movie of all time.”
Why lord, why!?! It seems that the waiting will never end…what does this mean Prattpratt? Why must you torture is with vague comments?
Well it seems that while we are all in a waiting mood, prolific singer in Rock N’ Roll wants to try his hand at appearing in the 3rd installment of the film. While out promoting Happy Birthday, an upcoming indie film, former Aerosmith lead man Steven Tyler expressed his hopes to make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.This of course came after he was asked about what bigger movies in the near future he’d like to be a part of and he singled out the third installment as his goal.
“I hope [audiences] enjoy [Happy Birthday]. I know I did! It made me want to do more movies for sure, I would do anything to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – are you listening James Gunn?”
Now don’t count the guy out has been in plenty of onscreen productions, although mainly as himself. Now we’ve barely seen anything for the 2nd or know how the story will end, and there has not been a formal announcement that their will be a third installment, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Marvel do another, of course keeping in mind the possibility of an unexpected flop. But no matter when the third movie comes out, it would be easy to see Gunn finding a cameo spot for Tyler. The Guardians 1 and 2 director would be the man to ask to get a potential role, that is, if he stays with the title moving into the third film. Gunn has stated multiple times that he is not sure if he will return for another movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after GOTG 2. So we’ll stop the speculation train here before we get too ahead of ourselves, because we still have a long way to go until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
