If you stayed till the end of X-Men: Apocalypse when it came out earlier this year, then you know that the post-credits tag hinted at the imminent arrival of Mr. Sinister. Although the character is not that well-known to non-comic book fans, he’s actually a pretty major X-Men villain, and has been the puppet master behind some fairly tragic moments in X-Men history. The fact that Bryan Singer Easter egged Sinister at the end of Apocalypse portended some very bad things, but it turns out that those bad things may be happening much sooner than we expect, like next spring’s untitled Wolverine sequel.
According to Cinema Blend, Singer reveals in the commentary track on the upcoming Blu-ray release of Apocalypse that Mr. Sinister will be one of the main antagonists in the upcoming James Mangold sequel to 2013’s The Wolverine. That would make sense given that we see the mysterious fellows from Essex Corp at the end of Apocalypse collect samples of Wolverine’s blood. The answer to “What are they going to do with it?” may now be revealed in the upcoming Wolverine movie, if Sinister is indeed the main villain, or a main villain. All that we know about the bad guy in the film is that he’s a “mad scientist type” and he’s being played by Richard E. Grant. If Richard E. Grant is playing Mr. Sinister, then that is, in a word, awesome! Plus, Mr. Sinister’s comic book origins is as a genetic scientist called Nathaniel Essex. Coincidence?
It’s amazing to realize that there’s still so much we don’t know about the new Wolverine, which may or may not be based on the Old Man Logan graphic novel, but will definitely be the final screen performance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and might be the last appearance of Patrick Stewart as Professor X. We may get answers soon though, because there are rumblings that a teaser trailer for the film will be released in the not too distant future, which might start to answer some of our questions concerning the plot.
In the mean time, X-Men: Apocalypse is now available to buy on digital download, and will be available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray on October 4; the upcoming Wolverine will be in theaters everywhere on March 3, 2017.
