When it comes to the Predator film series, the star has always been the titular alien hunter who’s constantly on the look out for the most dangerous game of all. Having said that, the Predator has chased a wide variety of game on the big screen, from the preternaturally strong Arnold Schwarzenegger in the first Predator, to the somewhat more average Danny Glover in Predator 2, to Adrien Brody with a big freakin’ gun in Predators. But if the following news is true then the Predator is really about to meet his human match for the upcoming Shane Black sequel The Predator.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Benicio del Toro is in negotiations to come on to the film widely expected to be called The Predator in order to play the film’s lead. Much like the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators though, THR is saying that Black’s film will be “an ensemble piece anchored by the character to be played by del Toro.” There’s yet to be any official word about plot details or any further casting about The Predator, but it’s widely expected that the film will feature the return of Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch in some capacity, but that has yet to be confirmed.
For the film nerds out there, del Toro needs no introduction, he won an Academy Award for playing a conflicted Mexico cop in Traffic, and he’s co-starred in other great films like Snatch, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Usual Suspects. The just plain nerdy though have come to recognize him for many key parts including Jackie Boy in Sin City, The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy, and a mysterious role that’s widely expected to be villainous in Star Wars Episode VIII. As for The Predator, if del Toro shows up and he’s as scary as he was in Sicario, then we are definitely not going to want to miss this.
The Predator is scheduled for a February 9, 2018 release.
