Back in 1973 (a year some of our readers may even be old enough to remember), there was a movie by the name of Westworld that was destined to become a cult classic. Now, some 40+ years later, Hollywood has finally decided it’s time for another crack at it. The marketing has been hitting the Internets for weeks thus far and now, shortly before the release is scheduled, HBO is sending us yet another look at their creation. Scroll on to check out the newest Westworld trailer, ‘Dreams’.
For those of you not in the know, the original Westworld was written and directed by Mr. Jurassic Park himself, Michael Crichton. As the story goes, the future of humanity involves fully immersive amusement parks, one of which just happens to be western-themed. Naturally, the creation of artificial life leads to some bad times for all the tourists. In short, the androids go bat-shit and start murdering everyone.
This new version seems to be following a similar theme of AIs-gone-bad, though looks to be much darker than the original. And, knowing HBO, it’s bound to be filled with all the blood, guts and boobs that anyone could possibly hope for.
What’s more, the cast of the new Westworld series is an impressive list of familiar faces and Academy Award winners, including Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford, the creator of the robot slaves, as well as Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and a host of others. To top it all off, we have directorial crew consisting of names such as Jonathan Nolan (the writer behind The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Interstellar) and Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones).
Take that all together and you can expect something dark, complicated and introspective. And the trailers certainly convey that tone at first glance.
