Star Wars fans lost their collective minds when it was announced at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year that non-canonical, fan favorite villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn, would be appearing in the 3rd season of Star Wars: Rebels. Back when Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, it was announced that everything outside of the 6 films, The Clone Wars TV show, and Star Wars: Rebels would not be considered canon. This effectively cast aside the countless books, comics, and video games that contributed to the Star Wars lore in the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Among those elements that didn’t survive Disney’s version of Order 66 was Thrawn, who first appeared in Heir to the Empire written by Timothy Zahn.

In the second trailer for season 3 of Rebels, the blossoming Rebellion sets its sights on bigger prizes that come with bigger threats. Chief among these is a heist of Y-Wings. Fans also get to see Ezra continue his struggle between the light and dark side of the Force as he hones his Jedi abilities.

The events of the season 2 finale heralded some significant changes for the band of rebels. Kanan lost his sight as a result from being injured in his duel with Darth Vader. The fate of Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul remain unknown, although we do see Maul in the trailer. He, along with Kanan, have glowing green eyes, which could be the result of some interference from the Nightsisters of Dathomir.

And then there’s Thrawn.

The scene where he is menacing Hera reveals two things: 1. Imperials will capture Hera at some point and bring her before the Grand Admiral. 2. If Hera is in Thrawn’s custody, that means he will have a chance to study her and learn valuable tactical knowledge that will no doubt be used against the Rebels. Thrawn is formidable enough when he only studies the cultural art of a species. Observing a live captive could possibly provide him with droves of data.

But enough geeking out, enjoy the trailer!

Season 3 of Star Wars: Rebels looks to make the jump to hyperspace on September 24th on Disney XD.
