Of the unexpected treats of Marvel Studios‘ panel at San Diego Comic Con was a short mockumentary made by Thor Ragnarok director Taika Waititi that chronicled what the God of Thunder was doing while his superhero buddies were beating on each other in Captain America: Civil War. A lot comedy was mined out of that bit with comedian Daley Pearson as Darryl, Thor’s roommate in what may be the most hilarious odd couple situation since Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and the people on the internet, who have seen the short since it was made public, agree. But is that the last we’ve seen of Darryl?
While talking to IGN about the pending home video release of his last film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Waititi mentioned the possibility of seeing Darryl again, perhaps either as a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok, or elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I think you probably could see him again. There may be other little pieces of that thing that everyone saw that may just be a small part of a bigger thing,” Waititi said.
Personally, it’s hard to say just reading that if Waititi is joking, but looking at the statement more closely, perhaps the idea that he was trying to convey is that there may be hints and Easter eggs inside the mockumentary that point to developments in Thor, and less that a very specific element like Darryl is going to appear. But seriously folks, must everything be canon? Must we go over every little bit of promotion with a fine tooth comb looking for every little detail? Can we not have nice things? Wasn’t it enough to see Hemsworth fully made-up as Thor and wandering around ordinary Australia in cut-offs? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how serious Waititi is about how much the “small part” will lead to a “bigger thing.”
Thor: Ragnarok will be in theatres everywhere on November 3, 2017.
