Take two of the hottest stars in Hollywood, put them together in a big Sci-Fi/Romcom/Action/Adventure December movie with a talented director and you’ve got box office gold. That’s what Sony is banking on this Christmas movie season when Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence pop onto the big screen in director Morton Tyldum‘s (The Imitation Game) Passengers. Now we’ve finally got the first trailer and it looks incredible. Pratt and Lawrence already set the expectation bar high, but throw in the scifi setting and a robotic bartender and you can call it a day.
The back story behind the production is fascinating. Written by Jon Spaihts, Passengers was once on the 2007 Black List of scripts, the list of the scripts that year thought to be the most liked yet un-produced screenplays of the year. The script was eventually picked up by Sony Pictures and had at one point or another, Keanu Reeves, Reese Witherspoon, and Rachel McAdams attached. Sony finally settled into production with Pratt and Lawrence, two very bankable stars.
The premise is pretty simple:
A spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened 90 years early and must find a way to save the other 5,000 passengers aboard their endangered ship.
Lawrence Fishburne and Andy Garcia look to be playing officers of some kind while Michael Sheen will be the ship’s robotic bartender. This movie is sure to do well at the box office. The mix of genres has this film positioned to do well with several different types of movie goers from the action/adventure lover to the romantic/comedy date film crowd.
Passengers hits theater screens December 21st.
