If it’s Friday, then it’s time for a completely random casting announcement for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, the upcoming sequel to Pacific Rim. Last Friday it was announced that Cailee Spaeny, an actress with three credits on IMDb to her name, had joined the cast, and now, in another “Who’s that…?” moment, the production is adding Levi Meaden to a line-up of that includes John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and presumably a number of other cast members from the first film. So who is Meaden, and who is he playing? Excellent questions that are unlikely to be answered any time soon.
Well, we can answer the first part. Meaden is a young actor who’s appeared in various things you may know: the Netflix-based final season of The Killing, the CW’s The 100, and the Syfy channel’s Olympus, he will also be a regular on the new SyFy series premiering next week, the post-apocalyptic Aftermath. In the case of Pacific Rim 2 though, Meaden will be playing “an irreverent and offbeat cadet” named Ilya, according to Variety. Chinese actress Jing Tian, who will be appearing in two upcoming films produced by Pac Rim production company Legendary: Kong: Skull Island and Great Wall, has also joined the cast. That one’s a shrewd move given how important the Chinese box office was in securing a sequel for Pacific Rim.
With these further casting announcements it seems that the sequel is on track to begin production some time later this fall. No word has yet be given on story details, but Pac Rim 2 will be shooting on location in Australia and China. Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will be in theatres everywhere on February 23, 2018.
