We’ve got some good news and some bad news for Adventure Time fans. The good news, Adventure Time Season 9 has started production, the bad news, this will be the last season of the hit animated show. Cartoon Network is pulling the plug on any additional seasons. The announcement comes just two weeks after Cartoon Network canceled another of its popular animated series the Regular Show.
Adventure Time season 8 should begin its run later this year with season 9 hitting some time in 2018. That will make it an eight year run with 142 half hour episodes for fans to enjoy on DVD/Blulray or on demand streaming. The quality of the series is easy to see as it garnered six Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award through 7 seasons with more possible for the last two seasons on the horizon.
Creator Pendleton Ward had this to say about wrapping up the series.
‘Adventure Time’ was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.
The Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network Rob Sorcher said this in the announcement:
‘Adventure Time’ changed the definition of what a kids’ TV series could be, and it’s had a resounding impact upon popular culture around the world. Cartoon Network Studios is proud to have brought together this group of brilliant artists and animators who helped make ‘Adventure Time one of the most critically acclaimed TV series of a generation.
There is some hope for more original content after season 9 as Cartoon Network also stated that there will be Adventure Time specials and miniseries in the works after season 9.
