Remember this picture? It was posted on social media several weeks ago when Thor: Ragnarok was shooting in downtown Brisbane, which was doubling for downtown Manhattan. It appeared as though the God of Thunder were looking for an address in Greenwich that is the location for the Sanctum Sanctorum, also known as the home of Doctor Strange. So over these many weeks, the rumor mill has been churning, will the Sorcerer Supreme make an appearance in the next Thor feature? Well, this latest piece of grist for the mill was provided by Dr. Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, and it seems to indicate that yes, yes he is going to appear in Thor: Ragnarok.
While talking to Thor co-star Tom Hiddleston in Interview Magazine, Cumberbatch seemed to tip his hand. The relevant portion has been emboldened below.
I felt it was all about the part rather than everything else. I’ve been to Comic-Con, and it’s a very nice way to give back to the fans that drive these things. It was quite scary. I felt like Pink Floyd. It’s just like, “Hello, hi,” after the fans are all screaming. That side of it is just phenomenal, and it makes me giggle, and I don’t know whether I’ll get used to that. I can’t wait to see how it expands the universe. I’m also part of your crew! It’s an amazing cast of actors. And it’s the most fun hard work you’ll ever do, I think, as an actor. They really know how to treat you right. And the material is challenging, witty, and a lot of fun to do. Doctor Strange is a complex, funny, but exciting character.
If there’s a caveat to this reveal it’s that Cumberbatch could be talking about the “crew” and the “amazing cast of actors” for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it does seem like from the context that Cumberbatch is talking directly about Hiddleston and Thor. One wonders though that if Cumberbatch might now be in a bit of trouble. A picture of a business card with an address on it is one thing, but an admission on the record… Good thing Marvel really likes Cumberbatch.
Doctor Strange is in theatres everywhere on November 4; and Thor: Ragnarok will be released a year later on November 3, 2017.
