With shooting in New York underway for the upcoming Netflix Daredevil spinoff show, little has actually been leaked about the specifics of the Punisher series starring Jon Bernthal. But it looks like a few casting bullets have fallen from the clip.
Joining the returning Bernthal will be Ebon Moss-Bachrach (HBO’s Girls) and Amber Rose Revah (Son of God). In addition, set photos have revealed a well known Daredevil cast member taking five with the Punisher. We’ll get to that in a bit. First, onto the new casting!
Entertainment Weekly reports that Moss-Bachrach, best known for his role as Desi on Girls, will play Micro or Microchip as he’s known in the comics, a former NSA analyst who has some sensitive information that Frank Castle might need. In the comics, David Linus Lieberman a.k.a. Microchip is an ally to the Punisher, supplying weapons and technology to the vigilante, and more importantly rolling deep in that sweet Punisher Van.
Revah has been cast as Dinah Madani, described as “a highly-trained sophisticated Homeland Security agent who is vexed by the Punisher.” Since there is no character by that name in the comics or otherwise she’s possibly an amalgam of some other characters or someone newly created just for the series.
While we’ve known since last month that actor Ben Barnes (HBO’s Westworld) would be part of the cast, his role wasn’t clear. According to TV Line it is now confirmed he’s playing Billy Russo, Frank’s best friend from their Special Forces days. It also happens that Frank runs a private military corporation called Anvil. This Barnes confirmation is a little strange since according to the imdb.com page he’s playing Bobby Saint a character that was seen in the 2004 Punisher film starring Thomas Jane (Hung). Since audiences weren’t exactly clamoring for that guy to make a comeback this new information sounds more legit.
And lastly, in keeping with the character cross-overs from the other Marvel Netflix shows, Just Jared has photos of Bernthal on set, joined by Daredevil actress Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page. Aren’t friends great?
No premiere date for The Punisher has been confirmed. Though Netflix previously said the series would be released after The Defenders (which comes after Iron Fist). The fact that The Punisher is already shooting can only mean good news though. Hopefully we’re looking for a premier date around late 2017, or early 2018.
