Normally the confines of Madison Square Garden are reserved for the Rangers of hockey and the Knickerbockers of basketball, but today it was full to honour the arrival of the Doctor of Gallifrey. For the most part, 2016 has been Who-less, and we’ve been feeling the effects, but when Doctor Who comes to New York Comic Con, then that’s reason to celebrate for sure. Who stands on the cusp of major change, we’re going into the last season for showrunner Steven Moffat, and the introduction of an all-new companion, but in the meantime, the conversation has turned to Christmas, and NYCC lent insight into the Doctor’s latest holiday adventure.
The latest Who Christmas special will see the Doctor team up with an investigative reporter (Charity Wakefield) and a superhero (Justin Chatwin) to save New York from an alien threat on Christmas. The episode, called “The Return of Doctor Mysterio,” will also introduce the new companion played by Pearl Mackie, and will see the return of Nardole played by Matt Lucas, who appeared in last year’s Christmas special “The Husbands of River Song.” Lucas can be seen prominently in the behind-the-scenes video below.
“It’s new, it’s brand new, you’re getting to see the Doctor through brand-new eyes,” said Moffat of the new special, the first time we’ve seen the Time Lord in a literally year. As for the new companion played by Pearle, Moffat didn’t tip his hat about that either. “I’m not going to say anything about ‘Bill,’ but you will discover her character and how she came to meet the Doctor when the show comes back.”
The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day (of course). Series 10 will premiere sometime in 2017.
