While Marvel‘s Captain Marvel movie is still almost three years away from its March 8th 2019 premiere date, Marvel has locked in Brie Larson as the lead and decided on the origin story direction for the film. Marvel Guru Kevin Feige recently confirmed the origin story story-line with Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend.
Feige told Eisenberg:
[Black] Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War. But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It’s an origin story from the start.
In the comics, Carol Danvers gained her Ms. Marvel powers (Strength, Flight, and Super Speed) when an alien artifact exploded. Later she goes through a number of changes becoming Captain Marvel, Binary and back to Captain Marvel. She’s had her ups and downs, struggling with alcohol addiction, but remains a great character in the comics.
The move to the big screen will combine some or all of those aspects in a slightly different origin story. Most likely Danvers will make an appearance in one of the Avengers: Infinity War movies in her pre-superhero persona as a security director of some sort. She’ll get her powers from some alien artifact like the original origin, but skip a few character development steps into the current array of Captain Marvel powers.
