Universal Pictures is getting ready to start their shared Universal Monsters universe with next year’s The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise. Also on their slate for this shared universe will be Invisible Man, Van Helsing, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Wolfman. Most of these films are in pre-production, however, it looks like The Wolfman is starting to pick up steam.
It’s been reported that David Callaham has been tapped to write The Wolfman. Callaham’s writing credits have mainly been in “big dumb” action films like Doom, The Expendables, and The Expendables 2. This doesn’t mean that Wolfman will be a “big dumb” action film, focusing on spectacle instead of story, though. Callaham is also credited as writing the story for the 2014 Godzilla film and is rumored to be writing the upcoming Zombieland sequel.
This will be the second reboot of The Wolfman in the last 6 years as there already was remade as a gothic horror starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins directed by Joe Johnston. The film was considered a flop, so back to the drawing board they go! Callaham so far is the only name attached to the film as we don’t know who the new Larry Talbot will be. Early rumors are floating that Dwayne Johnson might be in consideration. The new shared universe all depends on next year’s The Mummy reboot, so we’ll see what happens.
